At Unique we understand that its not just about investing in machinery, of equal importance is the value we obtain from our employees. We recognise the importance of a highly skilled work force, a workforce that is trained to the highest level to produce products of the best quality, and on time. Employee productivity and accountability is therefore of great importance to our business.
Earlier this year we attended Glassex 07 and came upon the TotalControlPro systems and enjoyed a demonstration of their barcode solution. What endeared us initially was their transparency and openness . Rather than telling us about themselves they were keen to understand our needs, and address our issues. After a couple of meetings we were invited to meet with a couple of their clients and view first hand the barcode solution working in a live production environment.
Meeting with other peers within our industry, and understanding from a customer perspective how the system had improved their business provided us with the level of confidence we required to proceed and place our order. In September 07 we installed 20 x barcode workstations.
As a business we now have complete control within the factory, no more work detail paperwork. Prior to scanning a frame or sash the employee must scan their own badge. Information relating to the job is show on a screen, which eliminates assumptions. Information recorded against the scan will list each scan by operative, time of first scan, and of last scan. In addition number of total scans against each stage. Further by recording the scan against the operative, you can isolate quality issues within the factory by identifying the operative, and then implementing measures to mitigate against future mistakes.
What was of importance to us was to determine the complexity and length of time taken to complete a job. To that end, the company to on the feedbakc and rewrote their BARCODE scanning solution. What occurs now within our factory is that an operative scans their work badge which signifies the start of that job, once completed they are then required to scan their badge again. The time recorded between the time of the 1st and 2nd scan being the time spent to complete the job.
Further within TotalControlPro we wanted an ability on screen to see in real time all orders not yet despatched. The system will tell us the batch number, frames on the job, total of frames completed, frames loaded as well as the nett sales value of that job. What has impressed us most is that TotlaControlPro will sit and understand how our business works, and subsequently focus their development of the system to suit our requirements.
